What to expect from design to delivery
Custom plushies let you create fully personalized merch designed around your brand and vision. Because they’re made from scratch, they involve thoughtful planning and a structured production process. This guide walks you through everything you need to design, launch, and manage your plushie project smoothly.
How custom plushies work
Custom plushies require manual setup and coordination with Fourthwall’s production team. The process includes design review, sample creation, pricing confirmation, production, and fulfillment.
At a high level, the flow looks like this:
Submit a request in the product catalog for a plushie / plushie keychain
Design review and feasibility check
Sample creation and revisions
Final pricing confirmation
Preorder campaign or bulk purchase
Production and shipping
Key requirements
Minimum order quantity (MOQ): Production requires a minimum of 300 units per design
Sample cost: Approximately $150-200, including revisions and shipping
Sample timeline: 7 to 10 business days + shipping (up to 3 weeks for complex designs)
Included revisions: 2 rounds ($50 per additional edit)
Production timeline: Typically 60 days after bulk production confirmation
Design and documentation best practices
Clear design input speeds up production and minimizes revisions. Please refer to the Plushie Design Guide for a more in-depth overview of things that are needed to guarantee better success
Submit designs in AI vector format whenever possible.
Provide typed notes and instructions instead of handwritten annotations.
Upload reference images, sketches, or physical samples if available.
Include front, side, and back views of your plushie design.
Use Pantone C color codes for accurate color matching.
Resting position and structure
Plush toys can be produced in standing, sitting, or lying positions.
Depending on your design, the manufacturer may recommend specific stuffing and internal structures to maintain stability, shape, and visual appeal. More complex poses may require additional sampling time.
Sample creation
Before mass production, a physical sample is created for approval. This allows you to catch design or structural issues early, before committing to large-scale manufacturing, where changes become significantly more costly and time-consuming.
Validates materials, size, colors, and construction
Includes two rounds of revisions
Helps finalize accurate production pricing
Approving the sample ensures production runs smoothly with minimal surprises.
Preorders vs Bulk Ordering
You can launch plushies in two ways, depending on how you want to fund and manage production.
Preorders
Supporters pay in full during the campaign
Production requires a minimum of 300 units per design
Production begins after the campaign ends, and only if the MOQ is reached.
Pre-orders only last
Preorders are ideal if you want to validate demand before committing to inventory.
Bulk purchase upfront
You commit to producing at least 300 units
50% payment is required before production begins, and 50% before shipping
Production starts immediately after confirmation
Inventory can be stored for future sales
Monthly storage fees may apply
Bulk ordering works best if you are confident in demand and want products ready for ongoing sales.
Production and fulfillment expectations
Production timelines and shipping costs vary based on design complexity, materials, factory capacity, and destination. Because plush toys are handmade, slight variations in color, shape, and stitching may occur.
For the most accurate estimates on production schedules, shipping timelines, and pricing variables, contact Fourthwall Support after submitting your request.
Best practices for a successful plushie launch
Set clear delivery timelines before launch. Let your audience know production only begins after the campaign ends, and that plushies have a longer fulfillment timeline than print-on-demand items.
Use preorders to confirm real demand. If you are unsure about volume, run a preorder campaign to reach the 300-order minimum before committing to bulk inventory.
Submit complete design files from the beginning. Include final artwork, size specifications, color references, and all necessary details to prevent delays during sampling.
Price with production and shipping in mind. Account for manufacturing costs, international shipping, taxes, and potential storage fees if ordering in bulk.
Communicate progress during production. Share updates at key milestones so supporters know what stage the plushie is in and when to expect delivery.
